Kenyan darts sensation David Munyua says one of the biggest achievements he made during his run at the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship was to earn Africa more slots at the global event.

Munyua, who in December 2025 made history as the first Kenyan to grace the championships at Alexandra Palace in England, believes the belief he showed served as a good example to the world, that Africa also had the talent to go head-to-head with the best.
The unranked player, who only picked up darts in 2022, stunned the world when he beat Belgium’s top-ranked player, Mike De Decker, 3-2 in Round One, before exiting the championships in the next stage, courtesy of a 3-0 defeat to Kevin Doets.
Days before his appearance in London, Munyua spoke of how he wished to see more slots awarded to African players, as he believed there were lots of talented players in East Africa.
After his big win over world number 18 De Decker, PDC obliged, increasing Africa’s World Championship qualifiers from the 2026/27 event to two.
Speaking to NTV’s Sport On on Monday, 12 January, Munyua spoke of that moment as one of his main highlights, during a month in which he also earned life-changing prize money and earned a dream trip to Chelsea’s home ground, Stamford Bridge.
“That is one of my greatest achievements that I made,” Munyua, who is a full-time veterinarian in Murang’a, said of the added slots for Africa. “Africa is big, and we have so many players.
I am happy I was an example that we [African players] put more effort, we don’t give up, and we go with faith, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. The belief that I had was too strong not to do it.”

In previous years, only one player from Africa made the cut, but the new PDC agreement with African Darts Group will see the African Continental Tour feature six events each across the Northern and Southern regions, respectively.
“I am now guaranteed that another Kenyan, Ugandan or Tanzanian, this year, no matter what, will be in the World Championships,” Munyua said. “We have been competing with South Africans, but now we are sure a slot is coming to East Africa.”
Shortly after his exit from the tournament, Munyua also saw his other dream come true when he was a special guest at Stamford Bridge and got to watch his club (Chelsea) play Aston Villa.

On that experience, the 30-year-old, who admits he wanted to play for the London club when he used to play football in his early days, said: “Everything was super. How they (club officials) welcomed me, the hospitality, it was amazing.
I met a lot of icons there, and they made me learn something about taking previous players into management. We need the same thing right now, where players who have been there, talk and lead the sport.”
Asked about the potential growth of the sport in Kenya, Munyua called upon sponsors to walk hand-in-hand with darts stakeholders.

“We are calling upon sponsors to come on board,” Munyua, who travelled with no set of darts, said. “We have a lot of things to improve on. We are still on the ground; we have not even started.
I am now trying it for the first time, and I am calling upon companies to come and support the sport, just for consistency. That is what matters.”
Having shattered the glass ceiling, Munyua, nicknamed “Why Not”, believes there is more to come from him this year.
“I will come back with the trophy. Why not go for the win?”
